Celina Carrillo is an llustrator and printmaker based in Baltimore. As an artist who works primarily with traditional mediums, the creation process itself is a source of passion. Their art is colorful and whimsical, drawing inspiration from their dream journal and great curiosity about the world. They are a lifelong student eager to learn more.
When they’re not working they enjoy cosplaying, keeping up with astronomical news, and over-analyzing television shows. For artistic inquires or to discuss how the universe may end, contact celinacarrillo326@gmail.com
Artist Statement
My art is based on my unconscious and subconscious dreams. My work explores desires, fears, and distorted memories. I often have lucid dreams which means I’m making active choices about how I want to continue the story, and this mirrors my art making process.
Process is one of the most important parts of creating art to me and I connect to my pieces through the use of traditional mediums. Being involved in the physical process and making choices, consciously or not, reflects the state of my dreams and I am able to communicate my mental state. I want to retell the vivid stories my mind comes up with and I can do so by pulling inspiration from my dream journal. Journaling has become an important part of my process as I have been keeping a dream journal for several years now. Writing helps me recall the events and examine why I may have made choices the way I did.
The printmaking process mirrors the way I want to relay my dreams. The journeys I go on in my dreams are layered, and being able to replicate that through relief printing and screen printing allows me to tell those stories effectively. I am an illustrator first but that’s not to say that I can ever be just an illustrator or just a printmaker as my printmaking really depends on my illustration practice.
